Editor's Note
Today we learn that our Excel blogger, Chris Wood, is a
bluegrass fan. Who knew? I myself am an avid bluegrass fan,
wannabe bluegrass fiddler, and can recall my favorite bluegrass
experience of interviewing Earl Scruggs when he performed in
Bloomington, Indiana, where I was a journalism student at
Indiana University. A press conference was scheduled, and I was
the only reporter who showed up, so I had a private audience
with the banjo master.
I had only written down a few questions because I thought I
would be one of many reporters, but I found Mr. Scruggs easy to
talk to and he enjoyed an opportunity to reminisce about his
childhood. As he spoke, I could picture a little boy sitting on
a creaking front porch, learning to pick out tunes in the
southern heat. He didn't mention it, but I have to assume there
was an old bloodhound sleeping at his side.
