Editor's Note
Gail Perry, CPA, Managing Editor If you've thought about going back to school for an advanced degree, but can't take years off of work in order to get the schooling you need, consider an online degree program where you can work and study at the same time. Online programs are increasing in popularity and respectability.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the newest demographic group among workers: The Unretired. Coming to a workplace near you!

Best wishes,
Gail Perry, CPA

Online MSA programs allow students flexibility to earn degree
The flexibility of taking classes remotely whether at home or in a hotel room has both prospective accountants and CPAs turning to the Internet to complete their Master of Science degree in accounting. AccountingWEB spoke with Dr. Andrew Rosman at the University of Connecticut about the online MSA program. Courses in the program focus on student-centered learning, which is the active engagement of students in the learning process, and information literacy, which is a series of processes beginning with identifying an information need and, ultimately, producing and communicating a decision, according to Rosman.
Incorporating social media into training objectives
With the increasing uptake of social media and engagement, trainers have the opportunity to reach employees through entirely new mediums. With so many using the most popular services, such as Twitter and Facebook, the challenge is finding the right social media outlets and strategy to fit training objectives, and how to use this opportunity to full effect in terms of pushing out training materials and engaging with learners.

'The Unretired' mark new demographic shift in workplace
Just as managers finally figure out how to challenge and reward Generation X and Millennial employees, a new demographic segment in the workplace is emerging Generation U, or the Unretired. The Unretired are those who have found that retirement just isn't working out for them, or they realize that they just can't afford to retire after watching their stock portfolio dwindle and their house value shrink during the recession.
Training is critical in good, bad economic times
For years, training often was something organizations felt obliged to do. That is, they felt obliged until things got bad and then, like other costs, spending on training was slashed until company finances got better. But in the recently finished recession, things changed. Yes, some training teams have been badly hit. But, overall, we missed the slash-and-burn response of previous recessions. The reason is that people now know that skills matter.
