"Computing is not about computers anymore. It is about living." So said Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory. I, personally, prefer a less cerebral quotation by Apple Inc. cofounder Steve Wozniak: Never trust a computer you can't throw out a window.
Nevertheless, computers in all their forms have become an intrinsic tool for the accounting profession. Keeping up with all of the advances and how they can make our jobs easier, however, is no simple feat. Just when we started to get a handle on laptops, netbooks, and smartphones, manufacturers unveiled the tablet computer.
This edition of our technology-related In the Zone includes ways accountants are using Apple's iPad. Also, we detail the features to consider before purchasing a laptop computer. Thankfully, the one feature all laptops share is that they can be thrown out a window.
Sincerely,
Bill Grabarek
