Interns and new graduates face a brighter hiring future

The Collegiate Employment Research Institute and the Career Services Network at Michigan State University recently published a study called Recruiting Trends 2010-2011. According to this study, the college segment of the labor market is about to rebound (good news), hiring is poised to increase a bit (3 percent), and hiring of recent college graduates is expected to improve by an impressive (relatively speaking) 10 percent, according to 4,600 employers who participated in this study.

Forget retirement – let's work forever!

According to a Barclays survey, 60 percent of wealthy individuals say they never plan to retire. This group of "Neveretirees" is expected to grow over the next several years as more than 70 percent of respondents under the age of 45 say that they will always be involved in some form of work. Equally startling is the fact that 32 percent of these people plan to work between five and 20 hours per week in retirement, and 7 percent plan to work more than 20 hours per week.

Stress levels in 2011 are set to soar and everyone's at risk, according to the UK's leading authority on stress at work – The Stress Management Society (SMS). The SMS claims that 21st century stress, caused by living in an always-on 24/7 style culture, is having a significant effect on people's health and well-being. And that's a trend that is unlikely to go away. The SMS says stress levels are at an all-time high – the highest since the group was launched in 2003. SMS is warning people to look out for stress symptoms and have a plan to combat stress if it arrives.

When violence affects the workplace, what liabilities do employers face?

Last summer, in what police have called a domestic dispute, a man walked into an Old Navy store in the middle of downtown Chicago where his girlfriend worked. He pulled out a gun and shot her to death, then killed himself. Not only did store managers have to deal with the emotional, public relations, and logistical fallout from the shooting, the family of the murdered employee soon filed a lawsuit against Old Navy.
